INSIDE THE RESTAURANT, a waitress approached Brant’s table. “Mr. Mayor, no need for alarm. The police have everything under control,” she said.

“Thank you,” Brant said.

Denzer’s phone rang. “I have to take this,” she said, nodding at Brant and the commissioner at the table. She stood up from the table and walked outside the restaurant, strolling up the sidewalk a few paces before answering her phone.

“What do you want?” she asked.

“I’m on my way to Lakeland,” Lemen said. “I believe Jadine is on her way to see her brother, if she hasn’t already.”

“Well, I’m here with her brother now, and she’s not here. Aztec mentioned he would be sending some other people to do the job.”

“There’s no need for that.”

“Really? Not from my perspective. I thought you were one of the best, but you were shown up by some random guy.”

“I told you that he wasn’t just ‘some guy,’ and if I’d had more time, this would have been a lot smoother.”

“Are we making excuses, now, Lemen? Because you’re being paid a lot of money.”

“I’d watch my tone if I were you. I’m not the one Aztec will come after if this isn’t pulled off right, and it’s not just about the money to me anymore. I don’t like to leave a job unfinished. I’ll find the girl and this ‘random guy’.”

“You’d better—they’ll be voting soon.” Denzer ended the call and started back to the restaurant, but a voice called to her.

“Commissioner Denzer?”

Denzer spun around. “Excuse me, do I know you?”

“Well, we have a common associate,” Black said.

“Oh, and who might that be?”

“My boss. You may know him as Aztec.”

Denzer glanced around nervously. She began to tremble. “Di—did … he send you here?”

Black nodded. “We need to talk. It won’t take long. Follow me.”

Denzer sheepishly trailed behind him into an alleyway behind the hotel.

“Okay, it should be safe to talk here,” Black said with a serious face.

“Look,” Denzer began, “my guy had the situation under control, but he ran into issues when some guy showed up.”

“Did he describe what this guy looks like?”

“No, he didn’t, but he mentioned he may have had some type of training. I believe it, because my guy came highly recommended. No average man could’ve gotten the best of him.”

“So, tell me—what was the plan of this guy of yours?”

“Well, I told him to just take Brant Ellington out, but he said that would be too messy. He preferred kidnapping Brant’s sister and using her to force Brant to vote against his own plans.”

“So, where’s the sister?”

“I told you, he ran into some complications. She got away.”

“That’s too bad.”

“Look, I know this could cost Aztec his drug operation here in Lakeland but when I’m governor, I can help him set up shop anywhere in the state he wants. So it’s in his best interest to keep investing in my campaign.”

Black peeked behind Denzer. A slight grin curved on his face.

Denzer saw his grin and smiled back. “See, you understand where I’m coming from,” she said.

“Just one more question before I go do my job.
